Hiere was quite a commotion in shipping circles this morning when a report spread that the watersiders loading tho Sydney steamer Ultimata had struck. Colour was given to the report when tho men in a body were seen making for tho International Hall, where n union meeting was. held. Inquiries showed that; matters were not quite so serious at painted by rumour. A stop-work meeting was bein& held for the purpose >of taking,a secret ballot arising out of the recent conference of feamen and shipowners concerning a further rise in wages,-and other trouble in connection with overtime to be worked in loading the steamer. The men opposed working later than fivo o'clock. Captain MathieEon took exception lo this attitude, and ft conference was-then arranged to discuss the situation. Tho matter was referred t« Mr. C. Davidson, secretary of the local branch of the Watersiders' Tinioi). Captain Mnthieson, and tho .Mayor, Mr. B. E. Ilornblow. _ These gentlemen went fullv into tho grievances of the parties. 'I'ho Mnyor_ addressed the men. and a further meeting of the union was held, when everything ivas settled satisfactorily, and the men decided to work overtime. "
