Melbourne, May 26. The compulsory conference on the shipping dispute has adjourned till Thursday. An amicable feeling prevailed, and it is confidently anticipated early settlement will result—Press Assn.
COAL SHORTAGE BECOMING ACUTE
Sydney, May 26. Unless a, quick settlement- is reached the coal position in all tho; Australian ports, and elsewhere, will bis. very serious. Already the shortage is being severely felt, nnd by the middle of next week] failing relief, it must result in the closing of many industries, and in. thousands of employees being , idle. Up to Saturday, it is estimated,..four_ thousand workers were directly or indirectly involved, by tho strike in Melbourne. In the meantime vast quantities of cargo aro piling up on the wharves in various porta awaiting shipment—Press A6sn. BROKEN HILL MINERS.
