CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON. Play in tho annual telegraphic patch between the Canterbury and Wellington Clnbs was concluded on Saturday evening in tho presence of a large number of spectators. iJr. Severne, the Canterbury champion, is spending a holiday in Wellington, and his game- at board 1 with Mr. Davies, the local'champion, was nccordinglv played over the board here on Wednesday. Mr. Severne played the lour Knights' game, and' gradually worked into tho better position. Davies neglected, an opportunity of displacing a wellposted Queen, and in tho subsequent fixchanges lost ii Knight and two pawns, his opponent scoring the game in 3b moves. The remaining fixtures were con. tinned on' Saturday evening, whon good progress was inndo, due mainly to the valued labours of tlie various officials mentioned in our last week's report. Tho ga-mo at board 2, Andersen (C.) v. Barnes (W.), is marked incomplete. The local player has a very promising attack. At board 3 W. E. Mason (W.) continued his attack successfully. He gained two pawnii and obtained tho" resignation of his opponent (H. Kennedy, ex-champion of the Canterbury Club) at move 37. At board 4 W. S. King (C.) followed up his advantage strongly, W. Mackay (W.) re signing at move 32. By a premature exchange of Queens, Kelling (W.) lost two valuable centre pawns. He then made a four hours' bid for'a draw, but had to surrender to Hawkins at midnight on thft sixty-fourth move. Still (W.) won the exchange at board G', and afterwards pave it back neatly to win a Bishop, Twyford resigning at move 39. H. L. James (W.) gave back tho piece previously won in order to gain tho exchange and two pawns. Ho thus had ft commanding advantage in the end game, and brought off a "mate in three" at move 38. At board 8 H. G. Loo (W.) kept up the pressure, and won a third pawn fraom Woodford, who resigned at move 42. Mi , . Lee, who represented Somerset County for many years, once more proved himself a valuable acquisition to local chess circles. At board 9 Goiltuchalk (W.) added to Ins previous advantage by winning a Rook at move 23, Joyce resigning without further piny. Tho next three games are marked (incomplete, and go to adjudication, viz.. Gourlay (C.) v. Gyles (W.), Brutou (C.) v. Taylor (W.), and Pike (C.) v. M'Nair (W.). As already reported, Canterbury scored at board 13 and Wellington at board 14. Tho local team lias thus scored six wins and Canterbury four-wins, while the remaining four games are to be referred to the Otago section of the New Zealand Adjudication Board.
