TOWN-PLANNING AND COLLEGES
Sir,—Lest anyone should mistakenly infer from Miss Coad's speech at tlie Townplanning Conference tiiat .this Boys' College is better able than the Girls' College to house tho certain increase of pupils who will bo struggling for -admission next February, will you kindly publish tho facts regarding attendances at both institutions for the l;«t three years and tho steps (if any) taken by the governors to cope with the situation ?-I am,etc., PARENI. [Inquiry elicited the fact that full provision woe mado in respect to both the Boys' and Girls' Colleges last year for the increase in the number of pupils at the beginning of this year, and in view or the possibility of a further increase next year the matter of providing still further accommodation is at present being considered by the Board of Governors. In this connection an article appeared m IL'itK DosiiNioN somo three months ago setting forth at some length the problems of the colleges, in particular the GirlsCollege, ami the alternative proposals that were being considered tov their future expansion. In that article it was set out that insteiul of further adding to the accommodation of tho present Girls College, which was in the centre of a densely-populated city district, that either a branch collego should be r set up at Wellington South or a. residential college should bo established in the country, yet within easy distance of Wellington, which it was caloulated would reliove to somo extent the pressure of tho city collego buildings. The figures asked for by our correspondent are as follow (they are the third term figures in each case) :— 1916. 1917. MIS. 42!) J!W ss(l •12-t 160 • 517
