AN HONOURED SCHOOLMASTER
MR. GEORGE MACMORRAN RETIRES-
At yesterdly's mooting of the Welling-, ton Education Board the fteignation o£: Mr. George - Macjdormn, headmaster, of the Terrace School for a number of. years, was received. (Mr. Thomas, Forsyth), who said that' Mr. MacMorran was very well known and. much respected in Wellington, and his work ns headmaster hod been much appreciated,. The number of names oil the. Terrace School honours board showed: more plainly- perhaps than anything else the value of Sir. MacMorran's scholastic training. Tliev had also the evidence of his popularity... on frequent oceastons when old students had rallied round him in connection with patriotic, efforts and other movements. Mr. MacMorran had been highly successful in every, way during his Jong and honourable'connection with the board, and he would move that the secretary (II r G. L. Stewart) should be asked to draft a nioLion fittingly cmbodying the sentiments he had expressed, puch motion labe minuted'and'a copy forwarded to Mr. MacMorran.

A tribute to Mr. MaeMorran was also' paid by Mr. K. M'Callum, M.P. He had known Mr. MacMorran for over thirty years, and he was the stamp of man' who should be encouraged. He was a kindly yet strict and intelligent man, who had won the confidence of the Education Board long ago. Wellington had been particularly fortunate in having such headmasters as Messrs. W. T. Grundy, Clement Watsou, and MaeMorran. "It is upon men like these," said Mr. M'Callum, "that the Government should bo stow honours—not on the military men. These are the men who are worthy of notice." .
The chairman's • motion wag carried unanimously. Mr. MacSlorran commenced his career as a pupil teacher in Glasgow in ISGS.After five years' experience lie passed on to tiie Teachers' Training College in Glasgow, whero ho spent two years. Tho year 1876 saw him a tutor-at the Training College in London, and ho was fivo years in nil in the metropolis. In 1883 lie came to' Wellington, and was appointed an assistant master at the Mount Cook Roys' School. Such was his undoubted ability that two years. later saw him appointed headmaster of the Terraco School, a post he retained with singular credit to himself and the school to tho present time. Mr. MacMorran'will sever his connection with the board'at the end of next month.
