OBITUARY

MR. ALFRED LINDSAY

Regret will be very widely expressed at the death of Mr. Alfred- Lindsay, the well-known boot importer and manufacturer, which took place yesterday morning. Mr. Lindsay, who was in his 80th year, was born in Edinburgh, and was, apprenticed' to -the boot trade in that city, completing his term in JBSD.. After working as a journeyman 111 Edinburghfor nine years, he left for New Zealand, arriving in Wellington by the ship Coleroon in- 18G7. lie at once started in business here, and for many years carried on a 'boot factory. Eventually _be confined himself to the retail ana importing business. In lS9fi he was elected a member of the' City Council, retiring two years later. He was one of the founders of the Wellington Bowling Club, and retained his membership v>ntil his death. By the death of Mr. Lindsay the Terrace Congregational Church has last its oldest member. Mr. Lindsay joined it soon after his arrival in Wellington, and for a considerable time was one of its deacons. Between 156.- olid tlio time of his death he revisited the Old Country' three times. Five years r-go he retired from business. For the past year or more he -had been in failing health. Last Thursdav week he became very ill, and he died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence in Bowen Street, the cause of death being heart trouble. Mr. Lindsay was' popular with all who knew him. He was twice married, and has loft a widow and a family of three sons -Mr. Alfred Lindsay, jim. (Auckland), and Messrs. Arthur and Charles Lindsay (Wellington)—and four daughters-Mrs. Charles Jenkins, Mis. Samuel Roberto, and Misses Lindsay (all of Wellington)— 27 grandchildren, a/id seven great-grand-children, The interment will be made in the Sydney Street Cemetery to-morrow. As a mark of respect tho flag over the Wellington Bowling Clubhouse was at half-mast yciterday.
