Kir James Allen, Acting-Prime Minister. left for the South Island last night. He is fioiiiK straight through to Inverearsill, whero he is to opeu a convalescent home to-morrow. Ho will be,back in Dunedin on Saturday, and he expects lu return to Wellington early in the week.

Major G. R, Mitchell, D.5.0., the officer who commanded the troops on the Carpentaria, is a Main Body man who went, awav with the Otago Mounted Rifles. He received the D.S.O. at. the last battle of the Somme, near Pozieres. The Otago Mounted Rifles were then attached t'Q, the 12tli Division, and were the only mounted unit in France. The mounteds went all through the second battle of the Maine with the 51st Division (Highlanders).
The Rev. R. H. Hobday, M.A., has been appointed '.headmaster of the Wellington Diocesan Boys' School at Da,y's Bay. Mr. Hobday was ti foundation scholar of his school, St. Paul's, London. Ho was a prizeman and exhibitioner of his college, Sydney Sussex, Cambridge, Ho took his B.A. degree with first-class honours in the classical tripos in 1901. Ho took his M.A. degree in 1305. Mr. Hobday'rowed in the Cambridge "May" races in 1902, and also won three college cups for rowing. The school, now closed for the holidays, will reopen oil June 5.

Dr. E. R. D. Milligan, a graduate of the Otago University, who has been on active service since 1917, has been -ippointed assistant to ■ thc_' Professor of Bhysiology at the Otago University.
The Rev. F, li. Blue, Presbyterian minister at Malieno, North Otsgo, is dead. Mr Blue, who was only -if years of age, was a school teacher before he entered tho ministry. He. was first stationed at Alexandra, and from there he went to Maheno. He was a son of the lato Mr. John Blue, of Waianawa, Invercargill. Mr. E. G. F. The chairman of the Technical Education Board (Mr. Georgo Frost) has beeu advised' that Mr J. H. Howell, the newly-appointed director of the Wellington Technical College, is suffering from an attack of influenza in Christchurch, and at last advices was seriously ill. In consequence the date of his arrival in Wellington to take up his new duties is indefinite.
Miss Hethei-ington, M.A., tutor and librarian of the Teachers' Training College, has been appointed a lecturer on the staff of the Training College.
Captain Clarence Eabone, son of Mr. Samuel Eabone, of Karori, has been appointed Area Officer for the Whangarei district, and leaves for the north on Friday to undertake his new duties. Captain liabone left New Zeiiland us a stall seigeant-major in the first battalion ot the llifle Brigade, took part in the Semissi operations, and later went across to France, where he was wounded, lor twelve months he was commandant ot the oDiffers' and non-commissioned officers' camp at Sling, where drafts from New Zealand underwent further training. He was also for a time adjutant of the isolation camp at Larkhill.; After iulnlling those duties, Captain Eabone return, cd to France, and was in the war zono ri"ht up to armistice <lav. He returned to"New Zealand in the Northumberland.
Mr B. L. Peterson, assistant clerk,of the Wellington City Council Committees, who recently returned from active service, has taken up his old duties at the Town Hall. •' \
Mr. W. Wallace has been re-eiccted chairman of the. Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the ■ eiismn;; two years, Mr. S. .T. llarbutt was elected deputy-chairman of tho board.
