SIMPLIFIED SPELLING TOR THE BABIES. Wun a peni, 100 a p«ni, Hot kros binu! ' By dhem for cur daut-cr.s, By dhem for eur suns. 'iVim ii peni, 100 n peni, Hot kros bunz! This is not an attempt to reproduce the language of n drill sergeant. Nor is it Esperanto or Danish, although it looks very much like it. It is a well-known nursery rhyme set to baby language by the Simplified Spelling Society. Proles.-or Skeat, the first president of "the soe'ely, propounded the theory Hint in the interests of etymology we ought to spell as wo pronounce. The idea of the, society is that if tho modern baby is taught to read rhymes auditories in simplified spelling ; ts pronunciation is greatly improved, and it gets a better hold on the conventional spelling as it grows up. Ttonce 'the society has just published a new book, Jingla and Sloriz," from which the above rhyme is extracted, with the object of teaching the baby to talk correctly. Here are a fow'geijs'froni the baby's vocabulary:— Hooches Poosikat. Fyerplais. Poestmanz Nok. Kwy-et-li. | Surpryzd. iMudher. Jioeziz. • "It is interesting to note," says Miss Irene Montague, tho secretary, "that if no transition from simplified spelling to ordinary spelling were necessary the work of 19 months could be done in 10. Even with the transition, which is made without difficulty, five months' time could be saved out of 1!) months.'' The new language is suitable for all babies, whether born in Sltimlnnd or in Park Lane.' The next step of the society ought to be to publish mi etymological guide to mothers on how to talk to their babies.
