LEAGUE FOOTBALL
SATURDAY'S MATCHES. The second round of the competitions was played at Petono on Saturday afternoon before a large attendance of spectators. Two matches were played, Athletic meeting Petone ]i. and Suburbs meeting Petone A. The first gnuic proved ratlier an easy-win for Athletic, the Pctone team being mostly . comprised of promoted juniors. Tho second game was an eye-opener to mauy wjio had never, witnessed the game before. Fast and open p!<iy wus the order throughout, and the result wus in doubt until near tho end of the game, when tho Suburbs team tirwi. PETONE A (13) V. SUBURBS (5). Fast and open play was the order during the first half, each side taking a hand- at attack, but the defence was very sound, the line only being crossed once. Whitley, scoring lor Petone from a combined, passing rush; Whitley aleo kicked a penalty-goal. In tho first half of the second spell Suburbs attacked very strongly, and Warring scored from a dribbling rush. Manning conveAted. ISveh play followed, and then Petone gamed the upper hand, and Parker and Porter scored from passing rushes," Cliilds converting one of the" tries. Good form Mas shown by Whitley, Porter, Parker, and Tailored for 1 the winners, and Warring, Manning, and L. Campbell for tho losers. Mr. C. Murphy 'was referee. ATHLETIC (22) V. PETONE B (3). Athletic defeated Petone B by 22 to 3. For the winners, Bradley (2), Wilson (2), Meares, and Wheeler' scored tries, Bradley converting two and Wheeler one. Blacker scored for the losers. Mr. A. White was referee.
