THEFT BY A CAIiTER 'FOURTEEN DAYS' IMPRISONMENT A ■ carter named George Edwards was charged before Mr. E. I'agc, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday with having on April 30 last stolen a hub and set of spokes belonging to a motor-cycle, tho property of Inglis Bros. Tho value of the articles was assessed at -C 2 os. Acting-Sub-Inspector Emerson 'said the goods were part of the cargo of the steamer Bessa, ,and had been stored in J shed on tho wharf. Tliey were sold to a cyclq dealer named Boucher for 10s., but the latter, being suspicious, asked for a receipt and was given one in the name of "G. S. Smith." Boucher subsequently followed accused, and found he was driving a lorry owned by Munt, Cottroll and Co. Edwards said ho found the goods on Waterloo Quay, and not seeing an advertisement in the papers inquiring for them sold them to Boucher, ne gave a wrong name because Boucher was suspicious. Ilis Worship sentenced accused, who I was represented by Mr. G. W. Mellisli, to 14 days' imprisonment. OTHER POLICE CASES. • Samuel Vogel Mason, who pleaded guilty to stealing three fowls, the property of Clara.Baylis, and valued at 125., was' fined <£3, with i 2 4s. 6d. costs. A fine of ,£5, in default 14 days' detention, was imposed oil Samuel Thomas .Sweetlove for stealing a ilask of whisky, valued at 55., the property of Percy Rogers. John A.del Brodin, a seaman, who was absent without loavs from 'the ship Terpsichore, was ordered to forfeit two day 6' pay. John Williams, a seaman, was remanded until .this morning on a charge of stealing 9000 cigarettes, valued at JEIO 75., the property of the New Zealand and African Shipping Company. Walte;; Richard Leary was remanded for a week on a charge of having been found helplessly drunk. It was stated thrit accused was behaving in a strango manner, attempting (o climb lampposts and standing in front of tramcars. Jaliez Ryder was fined £2 for committing a nuisance in a public, street. , the fourth breach of a prohibition order, Agnes Campion was fined and costs.
Informations agaiust Mrs. Ryan, wife of tho licensee, and John Ryan, barman, at the Wellington Hotel, of refusing to admit the police were dismissed. Oil informations of having been found on licensed - premises after hours, William Findlayson was fined J.% with 7s. costs, and James Campbell, 10s., with 7s. costs.
Annie M'Guiro was fined ,E1 for supplying liquor to a youth under 21 years of age, and on a similar charge Honora Whelan was convicted 'and discharged. Isaac Krancio was fined JSI, with 7s. costs, for failing to notify his 'change of address, tho cliargo having been laid under the regulations dealing with the registration of the addresses of aliens.
On informations of having i'ailod to attend military drills, George John -Moir Johnson was fined JJ2, with 7s. costs; Leonard Knapp and Trevor Ma,nsell Lloyd .£3, with 7s ; costs; and Victor Douglas Hall £5, with 7s. costs.
W. H. Owen was fined ',£2, with 7s. costs, on an information of having sold cigarettes after tho hours prescribed for the sale of tobacco.
James Ryan was convicted and discharged on an information of having assaulted Joseph Angus.
