FIFTH REGIMENT
1 0 FAREWELL TO MAJOR SIM. A special parade of the sth (Wellington) Kegiment was hold at the Garrison Hnll last night, -when the commanding officer, Major \V. Sim, took occasion to make a iinui inspection of the regiment prior tojiis retirement. Amongst tho officers present at tho ceremony were Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Coast Defence Commander, Colonel Sleeinan, Director of Military Training, Colonel Stamlish, R.N.Z.A., Colonel Esson, who is to assume command of the regiment, the Rev. W. Shiror, C.1?., second class,' and Captain W. M. Bell, Group Commander. There was a parade of over 400 of all ranks, including the regimontal band. After the inspection, Colonel Campbell commented on the very marked improvement that the regiment had shown of lato, and expressed regret that it was losing such an efficient and keen officer an Major Sim. ,At the call of Colonel Campbell, three hearty cheers were given tor Major Sim. Major Sim said ho highly appreciated tho honour of having commanded tho regiment during the past four years, and had felt it a great honour to'he associated with such a number of fine officers, n.c.o.'s, and men who had left tho regiment- to go to the front. During the war period there has boen many difficulties in keeping the regiment efficient, but the spirit of all ranks was keen, and was as good to-day as in tho past. With the assistance it deserved to get from the authorities, the regiment would soon he the "crack" regiment of the Dominion. It was particularly noticeable that a number of returned officers belonged to tho regiment, amongst them being Majors Gascoigno, Evatt, Cimino, and Captain Edwards. He wished the regiment every success in tho future.
