COURTRAI'S BURIED TREASURE
« , An entertaining stor.y is told.by an Italian writer concerning the manner in which tho municipal funds of Courlrai were saved at the time of the German invasion. When tho enemy arrived these funds, totalling a very considerable amount, were at (he Town Hall, and the . problem of their removal greatly exercised the civic authorities. The Mayor hit upon tho idea of a mock funeral, and on the second day of the occupation an imposing cortege' moved slowly through the streets with what tho Germans were led to believe were the remains of a distinguished citizen. The funeral car was heaped high with flowers, the city conncillors walked behind, and Gorman officers stood stiffly at the salute as the cofrin was borne past them. Needless to eay, tlie "corpse" ha 6 now been oihumed.
The death is reported fromrinfhieiiza of Mrs. Hughes, a. farmer's widow, , and. her ontire family of two 6ons and two daughters it Y«sifloff, a Flintshire vill*ee. ' ;
