KARORI BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The first meeting of tho recently-elected Karori; Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) presided, and thero wore present:—Councillors R. L. Tingey, J. C. Fulton, E. Harrison, T. A. Munt, L- G. Porter, F. 1". Laurenson, J. Burns, and J. Caughley. The Wellington ■ Central Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that now that the war was- over the chamber intended to resume its practice of each year calling together a conference of representatives of local bodies and chambers of commerce to discuss matters of common interest. It was further'stated that it was proposed to hold the conference at the end of next month. The council was invited to send' a' representative to the' conference, aiid the Mayor was appointed to represent tho council. The Collingwood. County Council wrote "asking'for' the support of the Karori Borough Council in calling for an Jα vestigation of the possibilities of the Puponga coal-measures. It was- stated in the circular that tho Puponga coal measures were the beet-known coal deposits in tho vicinity of the ports around Cook Strait. The Puponga mine is owned by the Seaford Colliery Co., Ltd., which is in liquidation. Tho Kunanga Borough Council wrote aslun'j; for support and co-operation in 'urging the Government to proceed expediliously wifli tho dnvolopineiit of the hew. coal seams lately discovered, prospected and explored at the Nine-Mile Bluff, near R-unauga. The council decided to accord its support to the proposal.

Councillor J. Caughley moved that an Amalgamation Committee he set lip, consisting of tho Mayor and Councillors Honder9on, Munt, Burns, aud the mover, and that this committee be asked to report to the .-following meeting of the council, as {0 "the best steps to bo taken to bring about- amalgamation of the Borough of Karori with the City of Wellington. After a short discussion this was carried.
