The Hon. W. H. Herries is going to Tauriingii, in iiifl own electorate, to-day. to be present there when His Excellency the Governor-General pays his farewell visit to the district. Tho Earl of Liverpool is not leaving the country yet for tome little time, but he intends to visit all parts of the country before he relinquishes his office to return to England. Widespread regret was expressed in Petone yesterday on tho receipt of tho news of the death of Dr. Ross, who passed away yesterday morning. The lato Or. ltess had been unwell for some days past, and had been undergoing treatment at Bowen Street Hospital. Dr. Ross was born in Turakina fifty years ago, and took his degree at Otago University. After serving i'or 6ome time as house surgeon on the Dunedin Hospital staff, he left tho country to continue hi* studies in London. On his return from England iu 1897 Dr. R-oss settled down in Petone, taking over Che practice of Dr. Foster, and ever since then he had served the people continuously and well. Dr. Koss was extremely' popular with all, and his strenuous labours during the recent epidemic will be remembered by all residents of Petone. His gema good nature and unfailing generosity endeared him to all his patients. The late Dr. Koss was well known in Petone Masonic circles, and he also took a prominent part in all local sports bodies. Prior to taking tho ordinary business of the Petono Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (..Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) drew attention to tho fact that in the death of the late Dr iioss Petono had lost a'very worthy citizen, and ho desired to move: "That this council desires to place on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the people of this town by tho .late Dr M. W. Ross, M.8., and especially 4 the self-sacrificing service rendered by him during the influenza epidemic, and extends its sincere sympathy to all his sorrowing relatives and friends, regretting tho untimely death of an .able medical practitioner and worthy citizen, ihac this resolution be forwarded to his; surviving relatives by the town clerk. Councillor Brockelbank secouded the resolu--1 tion, which vas.-carried in silence. Mr D. S. Thompson, manager of tho Bank of New Zealand in Whakatane, lias been transferred to the Wellington branch as accountant, and is being succeeded by Mr. A. S. Henderson, « of the bank's branch at Greytoira Mi. Henderson's place at Greytown will be taken by Mr. E. A. Campbell, fiom Kongotea. The last of a family of soldiers died tho other day in England, in Major-■General-John Edward bwmdley, CB. The general was 88 years of ago, ana had served at the siege of Sebaatopol, m the Mutiny, the Kaffir Wars of IS»2-J, and later in the march to Kandahar. He was the eldest of four brothers, three ot whom settled in New Zwtand-Major, Rwindley, of Tauranga; Captain Swindlev of Coromandel; and Mr. Harrj Swindles-, of Auckland-all pred~l the eldest brother. Two sons of the late Harry Swindley on service abroad wore able to attend their uncle's funeral. Mr. J. C. Seanlon', who has been in charge of the Lyttelton Gaol and tho Women's Reformatory at Addington for several years past, is about to become gaoler at Napier. Mr. fecanlon was presented last week by the medical ofhcei and staff of the Addington Beformatory with a gold pendant in recognition of his sympathetic administration. Mr. Bartlett Adnmson, who left Wellington recently to take up his residence in Sydney, has been appointed a subeditor to the new Australian paper. "Smith's Weekly."
