SHIPPING IDLE
"STOP-WORK" MEETING OF.WATEHSIDBRS. The local wharves and shipping were idle on Saturday morning while a. "stopwork" meeting of the Waterside Work--ers ! Onion was held in the Artcraft Theatre. The meeting was called for 8 a.m., and tho largo hall was filled. Mr. L. Glover, president of tho union, was in tho chair. The bueiness for discussion included receiving the result of tho recent national ballot in connection with the wages dispute. As already announced, the ballot decided against the acceptance of aii increase of 2d. per hour. In connection with this tho'local union had to elect its delegates to attend a conference of tho Waterside Workers' Federation to, bo held in Wellington on Wednesday. The delegates aro: Messrs. J. G. Brace, T. Brindle, E. B. Buchanan, and A. A. Aguew. A report was received dealing with tho state of the health of tho port of Wellington as it concerned the ecamen and shipping. The nature of the report was not. made available to tho Press.
The Wellington union rules and regulations were brought up to date by amendments of a not very drastic order, it wns stated. When nil the union business had been attended to, the meeting went as a deputation to Sir James Allen. to protest against; the War Emulations. A full report of tho proceedings appears under a (separate heading. ■ Tn the afternoon peroral steamers ■ were being worked at extra rates of pay, but a number were idle and their departures wera postponed to to-day.
