GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS

By Teleeraph—Press Assoolatlon. Christchurch. May 9. Tho crain and produce markets are very quiet at present. Thore is nothing fresh to report in the wheat trade, and growers are apparently recosnisinc that they must hold'their wheat until the millers require it. Although only Borne two months of the new cereal year have gone, millers have already purchased over two and a half million bushel b, and therefore are holdinK cood stocks. In addition to this, some Australian wheat has arrived, and another careb is expected shortly. The oats market has gone back a little, both in rates at which forward sales can be expected, and in prices that would bo offered to farmers at country stations. Farmers are, however, lioldinij firmly, and it is,doubtful if many would sell under 4s. at country stations at present. With tho winter to face, and with en unusually large number of stock to carry, and much of it in veryc low condition, oats /will bo required ,to play a. most important part in feedinc. as there is but a limited turnip crop.. The, nominal, value of A crrade Gartons is now 3s. Bd. to 3a. 9d., <ind of B erade Js. 61 to 3s. 7d„ at country stations, with no business doing with growers. , •Oatsheaf chaff has firmed in sympathy with oats, an inouiry liavinc set in from the North Island. It is now quoted at £5 to £5 ss. at conntry stations. ' Continued fine weather is tending to keep tho chaff market easier than it otherwise would bo. ... There is practically nothing rtoinß ,m .grass 6eeds. Cow Rrass is a ehade easier, and tho best price is now reported to be Is. ' , ' - , ' There is a fair demand for peas, and a number of saleß have lately been mado by erowcrs at ss. for Partridge, ss. .to ss. fid. for White Ivories, and up to 6s. for' Blue Prussians, at country stations. Tho fine weather lias enabled potato(rrowerß to push on tho work of dipeins. Deliveries have been large and considerable quantities have been shipped to Ihe North Island. At present, therefore, thn market is a little easier, and £5 10s. at country stations is the top price. Onions are firmer, and are now quoted at .-£6 ss. at stations. . There has been quite a spurt in the linseed market, .and sales , havo been made up to £17 per ton.
