APPEAL FOR FUNDS'ON BEHALF OF THE SEAMEN
Sir,—The Wellington branch of (ho B. and 3P.S.S. thinks Hint it would be a fitting tribute by the residents of Wei; lington and surrounding districts to use the opportunity which will be given by the forthcoming; peace celebrations to show their appreciation of what the Bailors have done for us, as well as other portions of the Empire. The sacrifices made by the seamen will probably never be fully realised, but the committee feel that an appeal made to the citizens nnd'farmers for funds to enable the society to give the seamen in port a really festive time when the peace celebrations take, place will -not fall on deaf. ears. The B. and F.S.S. has made several appeals to the public during the past four years, and refilly enjoyable times for the 6ailors hay? been the result, but the appeal now fieing made is a very special occasion; and is perhaps entitled to special consideration, aiid the committee, as trustees for tho sailors, will see that the money is put to the best possible use in the way of enjoyment for the seamen. Address donations to British and Foreign Sailors' Society, Post Office Square-, Wellington. —I am, etc., D. M'CALLUM, President.
THE CHILD CRUELTY. CASE
Sir,—An important point was raised as to the value of the evidence of witnesses in the recent case of cruelty to a child, not being mothers in the recent casa of cruelty to a child. I maintain, Sir, that every woman worthy of the name has in her the-mother-instinct. She and she alone, of her sex revolts against cruelty' toiyards tho young, I he weak, the defenceless, and steps into the breach every tima when these are threatened. Had not women, mothers in all but name, come forward to give evidence in this case, one shudders to think how ninny more months thnt little child lhight have been, subjected to such treatment. 'To what loss would the community commit itself that would disfranchise the woman, not a mother in the physical sense! All avenues would be closed to her that led to nursery, school, hospital, and she practically rank as imbecile or heartless, and be shorn of n woman's glory to bear' in her heart the helpless of ,our .vace— I am, etc., JUST A WOMAN.
