MANAWATU MEETING BIG RACE WON BY VAGABOND. SASANO.VS GOLD CUP. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Palmersion North, May 7. Pino weather'prevailed for tne opening day of the Maiiuwntu Meeting. The totalisator handled X'3G,(i9J, against i:45,91J on tho corresponding day last year. There were eleven runners in the Karere Hurdles, Master .Lupin being . the best backed, while there was plenty of support lor Sir Eisner, Thrace, and Jvahumangil, who were evenly backed. At the start the last-named and .Master Boris made play with the others handy. Master. Boris jumped badly and soon lost his position, and at the straight Kaliuniangu.led from Arlington, Master Lupin, and Sleight-of-Hand. The two lastnamed jumped klio last fence on terms with Knhitimitiga. Sleight-of-Hand then shot ahead, but was immediately joined' by Sir Fisher, and the pair went awny, but the condition of Sir Eisher told, and he faded away. Sleight-of-Hand won by a couple of lengths Horn Master Lupinwhile Sir Eisher was a neck away. Kahiimaiiga, Thrace, and Multicipnl were close up, the last io finish being Master Boris, Multuui, and Papanui, who were beaten off.
Coral Queen was withdrawn from Hie Maiden Plate, leaving half, a dozen runners. The two-year-olds were the best backed, and they finished up almost, equal favourites. They were together till the turn for home, whore both ran wide, and Glentour slipped up <n the fence. The other pair sopn joined him, and tho trio finished in a'line. Glentour won by a head, with Speechmnker right up. Vagabond . was always at the shortest price in ihe Autumn Handicap, Nobleman,. Marqueteur and Sweet Corn being evenly backed. When tho field settled down Sweet Corn led Bagdad, Nobleman and Marqueteur. Down the back the favourite and Battle Song moved up. Sweet Corn was done with before the turn for home, where Bagdad and Marqueteur and Tressida were in the van. The favourite then came fast, and he ran in a comfortable winner. Marqueteur beat Tressida by a neck, and then came Bagdnd, Sweet Corn, and Nobleman. The winner was at a'short price, and the distance suited him..
Amythas was favourite in .what, was regarded as- a high-class field for the Sires' Produce Stakes. The bracket, Warplano and Ermine was second favourite. The start was a good one, Ermine soon going to\ the ..front. She, Miss Mimic, and Bindlc • were prominent down ithe hack. Hounding the. 'bend Ilctaiia joined Miss Mimic in the lead, hut once the straight was .reached Warplnne came fast and he ran in.an easy, winner from Hotaua and . Amythas. Bindle, Affectation nhd Miss Mimic were the next to finish. Affectation, got. a bad passage, and so did the w-inner, who -was hemmed .in ou the-fence'nearly all the way. His win was secured ina-nibst convincing style, and he looks-like furnishing, info a topnotch three-year-old. He is engaged in all the principal weight-for-ago races next, season. '. •■■•■•
There were only ' fivo- starters in ' the Hack' Welter. Handicap, which was regarded as a. foregone conclusion for Pretty Bobby. . Kailaml led for a time, and was joined by' AVapping at the straight, The favourite then took charge, and ran. in a comfortable winner, hailand was ■ n neck clear of Wapping, -who will -be all the better for the. race.
' Much satisfaction was expressed -when Desert Gold was saddled up to compete against Sasnnof'in the.Gold Cup, while Bonnie Maid also took her place in tho field. In the paddock the two champions had big levees, and both were cheered when tliey went out for tho preliminary, in which they moved pleasingly. Susaiiof was made an odds-on choice. They went away to a beautiful start and Emeriun immediately steadied Desert Gold, whilo the other pair made the pace. Stride for strido the leaders run'to the three furlongs, where Desert Gold ir«s tiro lengths away, Then a roar went up from the crowd as Bonnie Maid lost her position and Desert Gold Vn3.seen to be moving Tip. .She-was on Sasanofs joints as they pwopt. into the straight','and then the crowd-roared itself hoarse. Bolh horses were hard ridden with hands and heels, but I lie favourite held his own and won by half a-length. Bonnie Maid was three lengths-a way. The crowd chipped the champions on returning; but the outside public was- much- more demonstrative,, and gave both horses a good reception.., Alter weighing in the winner was taken on to the lawn, where, the president of the club (Mr. Johnston) presented the- cold cup to Mr. W. G. stead. The lime recorded is a fraction 'faster than that put up by. Magpie when he defeated Desert Gold in the Melbourne Slakes.
The Woodhey Handicap was. a splendid betting race. Moutoa Ivanova was favourite, with big, support for Cadet, Black Mark, and The Speaker. Black Mark and Astinotiie were in charge, and they led alarch On into the straight; Asiinome was soon done wilh, but the other pair fought it out well, and March On,-on the outside, got the judge's decision.' Cadet was running on third. Moutoa Ivanova and The Speaker both ran "badly, .and were in the rear tlio whole way.
Chimera carried " most money in. die concluding event. The. start was a poor one, Ny.stad being badly left, and tlio favourite and Demagogue going- out in front. Tigritiyn was ill third place to the turn, where she and Demos challenged the favourite, but ridden out Gray's mount won by n length. Tigritiya beat Demos by a neck.
