■"NEW DEFENCE PUBLICATION." • The Defence Department has issued a small. hook, "The Soldiers' Guide," 'containing detailed information as to the privileges and concessions available to": soldiers overseas and in New Zealand before' discharge and- after discharge. .The matters' dealt with include the assistance given to soldiers' wives, fiancees, aud 'children, .in the way' of passagemoney, grants aiid advice upon arrival; the educational scheme in England and concessions to scholars wishing to:,complete their education abroad;-the procedure on disembarkation in New. Zea'- V land; travelling concessions; provision of Artificial limbs and other appliances; medical-treatment before and alter discharge (with description of the treatments at 20 hospitals directly un'der Defence Department control); the curative and vocational training system in hospitals; pay and allowances; including: retrospective separation allowance; the soldiers' financial assistance scheme, which has' been matte retrospective for men. who were serving abroad when the scheme w;as'initiated; war pensions; the Repatriation Hoard's organisation and facilities given by it to returned soldiers; particulars .of courses at State farms, and expert advice' on. agricultural subjects available to soldier settlers; land .settlement-opportunities, including the financing oj land purchases and the buying or building of dwellings; educational bursaries for,soldiers desiring technical or other education; the conditions affecting soldiers who- are members of the Public Service; issue.of war medals; protection from legal notion; and a number of other matters of interest to the ■soldier.
The new book brings a great mass of information- into handy compass, and it is sure to be of assistance to the returned men. An index • makes it easy for the reader to get at facts quickly. A copy of (lie book is to be jfiven to every returning soldier aboard the transports. Other men can get copies from Base Records and (ho Defence offices.
It.is.stated that an Air Service is to be- established in connection with the Canadian North-West Mounted Police.
