OVERCROWDED CARS
WELLINGTON TKAMWAYMEN PROTEST. The Tramways Union held two meetings yesterday to discuss overcrowding in the cars. Men of the p.m. shift attended tho first meeting, and men of the a.m. shift the second. Speakers described tho overcrowding at present permitted as dangerous to. the public and positively indecent into the bargain. Reference was made to ths announcement that the Government intended to enforce, from January i nest, the regulations its had instituted to prevent the evil. It was urged that something should bo dono before next year. The Government regulations in their present slate did not appear to the meetings to be altogether worthy of approval, and it was suggested that they would, require considerable amendment before . they could be satisfactory. Something was made of the fact that the City Council had failed to enforce even the special legislation relating to steep-grade routes, like those to Brooklyn and Wadestown. Finally the union decided to record its protest against the present 6tate of affairs. It appointed a deputation to wait upon the City Council, and urge that means be devised to minimise overcrowding.
