CITY AND SUBURBAN CONTESTS
MR. , J. P. LUKE MAYOR
The elections of Mayors and councillors nnd of members of tho-'Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and the. Wellington Harbour Board woro. nelci yesterday. The poll was about 17,000, rather less than the usual, probably because the people have had a surfeit of voting and election excitement lately. The Mayoralty results were declared about 9 p.m., being held up for most of.au hour by slow returns from distant polling places. The deputy-returning officers had colossal tasks with the huge lists on the ballot papers ' / , \ j MAYORALTY The election of Mayor resulted as follows: ' Luke, J. He hoped that duting the next two years the city would go forward in prosperity and nappiness. At Mr. Luke f s call, cheers v.ere given for the defeated candidates.
HARORI BOROUGH
MR, BURN RE-ELECTED MAYOIf. It cannot be said that very keen interest was taken in the municipal elections at Karori, as out of 1300 electors on the roll the total votes recorded was only 481, and one of these was informal. For the Mayoralty, Mr. B. G. H. Burn, the retiring Mayor, was., re-elected by the narrow majority of 27, his opponent being Mr. W. Skegg. ALr. Burn has already served four years as Mayor of Knrory "being elected on the two previous occasions ■ unopposed' On the result being announced, the Mayor-elect was loudly cheered. Mr. Burn, speaking from the steps of the Council Chamber, thanked the electors for placing him at the head of the poll, and said that he regarded the result, as indicating that the electors were still with him in.respect to amalgamation, and that the people of Karori appreciated his efforts of the past four je'are. Jle did not know at that moment who the new councillors would be, but he could assure them that he would do 'his best for the borough, and not favour one locality more than another. Mr. W. Skegg, the defeated candidate, also returned thanks. There was a call for three cheers for the Mayor, to which there was a hearty response. ' ■ ] There were only two Iwoths in tho borough, and the voting for the Mayoralty was as under:— • ' Council RusseH'6 Chamber, Store. Tl. Burn, B. G. H: MATHER ELECTED MAYOR, r Considerable interest was taken in the election at Eastbourne. In the Mayoral contest the sitting Mayor, Mr. P. Levi, wns defeated by Mr. P. 11. Mather, and the nominees of the Ratepayers' Association were very successful in the council election. After the results were announced, Messrs Mather, Levi, and Russell, the candidates for the Mayoralty, delivered brief speeches. •Mγ. Marquis, one- of the council candidates, also spoke, and Mr. H. W. Shortt, president of the Ratepayers' Association, referred to the success which had attended the. nominees of the association. ,
. THE LABOUR CANDIDATE. Mr. Bead said the returns showed that because of the splendid spirit put into the fight by Labour, Mr. Luke hail been elected on u minority vote-.. He believed that when the council figures came out Air::I 1 . I'rnsor would be fou , nd,«t the top of the poll, with other Labour councillors to support him. Labourdeinand--cd a fairer system of election. There, should be preferential voting in (ho Mayoral election and proportional representation for the council. Mr. Head suid that the Labour Party had suffered in the present light .through Hie <iisfranchisement of many people who had, voted at the last election and now found themselves off the roll. He thanked those electors who had given "such a good, solid, class Labour vote," and said that Labour was going to do still better in future fights. Labour hutl fought for definite, principles, ami both 'his opponents had been against Labour. ME. BARBER. Mr. Barber said he had stood at the request of the old members of the Wellington City Council. It was an anomaly that while other local bodies i'.ected their own' chairmen, the municipal councils were provided with chairmen by separatu vote The city councillors on this occasion had made a selection, which had not been endorsed by the electors. -He believed-that the decision of t.fio electors had been due to exceptional causes, arising from war conditions and war work, and that under other conditions the result would liavc been different. He felt sure that Isie position ho held in the poll did not represent tne appreciation of the people of the services he had rendered ing a long period of municipal activity, ll was gratifying -to him to fuel that he was leaving municipal life with the gc.odwijl of his fellow-workers in the City Council. Mr. Barber called for cheers for the Mayor-elect and Mrs. Luke, and these were given heartily. THE CITY COUNCIL RESULTS STILL 'INCOMPLETE. Election of Councillors, . The results of the council elections were not complete when Tub Dominion went to press this morning. It was, however, evident from the returns then to' hand that the following would be elected: WRIGHT, R. A. NORWOOD, C. J. B. M'KENZIE,; L. HUTCHISON, J. i LUCKIE, M. F. BENNETT, W. H. SIIORLAND.J. 0. ATKINSON, A. R. FEOSTj G. FRASER, P. DALE, J. M. THOMPSON, W. J. The remaining scats at that time lay among l CHAPMAN, C. H. . BENNETT, H. D. ■ MANTON. P. W. FORSYTH, T. HILDRETH, W. T. OAUDIN, W. J. GLOVER, J. This means that nine members of Ihe old council aro re-elected, with one other ex-councillor (Mr. Ilildretli) among the "probables." It is impossible for Labour to win more tlinn five seats, allowing to Labour all the doubtful places. Harbour Board. These returns were also incomplete. It was evident that Messrs. R. A. Wright, William Cable, »nd C. B. Norwood wei'O elected, and that Messrs. W. T. Hildreth and C. 11. Chapman wero running closely for the fourth seat, Hospital Board. Tlie Hospital Board returns were not more than half completed at the hour of going to press. \The Rev. H. van Staveren was top of the poll, and most of tho old members of tho board appeared to be likely to be returned again.
