LOST OVERBOARD
FATE Of RETURNING SOLDIER
A most distressing fatality loccurred during the voyago cf the liner Raranga, which arrived from England yesterday. When the vessel was about ten days out from the Home port of departure, en routo to Panama, a soldier known as No. 2/1245 Gunner D. M'Dougall, N.Z.F.A., jumped overboard and was lost. The steamer was immediately stopped, and endeavours were made to rescue the man, but he disappeared before help came. A soldier who witnessed th? occurrence stated that it appeared that M'Dougall made an. effort to swim to the vessel, but later disappeared. It i 3 stated that the deceased had been suffering from ill-healtli a. few days previous to tho occurrence.
A court cf inquiry was held on board, and the court found that the deceased jumped overboard whilst of unsound mind, on March 18, 1919. During its investigations the Court also discovered, it is understood, that the name M'Dou-.. gall was an assumed name. The correct name of tho deceased could not be ascertained. .
