FOOTBALL GROUNDS

A deputation from the Wellington I Rugby Union waited on the Petone Borough Council, in respect to. the use of the Petone Recreation Ground for the ensuing season. Mr. Hornchurch, on behalf of the deputation, pointed out that there "would be six Petone teams playing this season, aud if they could not get the prounds it would be a, hardship foe the young players. ' If the 60 per -cent, and 40 per cent, terms ottered were not suitable the union was prepared to make <» cash offer for the grounds. Mr,. They were not out to make money ont of the Potone Recreation Ground; it had never been a very remunerative proposition to the union. They wero proud of tho records of tho Petone Club in past years, and considered that the men who had earned such records were entitled to the recognition andv support of tho council. Thero would be over 6ome 100 Petone young men plaj - - ing the Rugby gamo this season. Teams from France and South Africa were expected, therefore it was essential that there should bo grounds to preparo and train up young playors.' Thoy intended to do all they could to encourage young players to stick to tho Rugby gnme. Mr. Lynskey also spoke on behalf of the Petone Club and the records won by the club, and referred to the genorosity of the Rugby Union in regard to young players, particularly sixth-class players, Councillor Cox nioved that the Rugby' Union be granted tho ueo of-Nos. 1 and 3 , ground on the basis of 60 per cent, to the council and 40 per cent, to the union, the union to provide the necessary gatekeepers.
