Tho Now Zealand Shipping Company has purchased a standard steamer now building oh the Clyde, and iB insulating her for frozen cargo. When insulated, sho will oarry 150,000 freight carcasses. Delivery is cxpectcd in November. The. vessel will be named tho Piako. THE COOEE. Tho Commonwealth. Government Bteamer Cooee. from New York, which put into Wollington for bunker coal oil Tuesday night-, and Bailed early yesterday for Melbourne, met with a similar difficulty in July last, when she was towed into Auckland after having burnt all tlio coal on board. Owing to tho censorship, however, tho fact was not published at that time. The Cooee, bound from New, York to Hohart on J.uuo 30 had reached a point 120 miles off tile East Cape. Her coal was then so low that she could scarcely keep headway. A wireless call for assistance was sent- out, aud was picked up at Auckland. The Wltangapo, en route from Maltatea Island to Auckland, was sent to her assistance, and took her in tow. A galo sprang up and so retarded progrcsß that tho Whangapo herself was running 6hort of coal. When this news was Bent to Auckland the Arahura, which was ready to sail for Gißborne, was dispatched to the Coooe's assistance, ' and brought her to Auckland. THE WAITANGI. Tho I'atea Farmers' Co-operative Company's steamer Waitaugi, which was bought at Auckland, and lias for soino time been at Wellington being made suitable for her new trade, will take up her running in the Wellington-Patca servico early next week. To-day she will liavo her compasses adjusted, and her freezer touted. On Monday Bhc_\vill sail for Patea, receiving cargo up to about noon. NOT FOR SYDNEY. An alteration has been lnarte in tlio itinerary of the Royal Mail steamer Makurii. She will not procecd to Sydney her through passengers being transhipped by another steamer not yet arranged. Tho Makura is scheduled to sail for Vancouver on May 13. 'MANUKA FROM HYD.NHY. The Union Company's Manuka, with cargo only, left Sydney at 5 p.m. on Thursday, and is due here on Monday afternoon. Dowcil, a well-known Wellington mariner, who has been laid up {or tho past fortnight suffering from an attack of influenza, is now recovering. Mr. J. E. Tho Union Company's cargo steamer Waimarino, which has just returned to Wellington after an absenco of ovor two years in tho service of tho Imperial Government, is commanded by Oaptaiu J. Thompson, late of the torpedoed Waihemo, and ivho relieved Captain P. J. Poster, and he has with him tho following officers:-First, Mr.'"A. It. Drlnkwater; second, Mr. N. Siepen (who served with tho New Zealand Forces, later joined tlio North ' Sea Destroyer Division, and ultimately tho Waimarino): third, Mr. J. Town (ex-Australian Navy); chief engineer, Mr. I'. 11. When she has been taken up on tho beach sufficiently far for the coal to bo discharged, she will bo pumped out and refloated.. Overseas vessels which sailed from Wellington yesterday included:—Kauri, for Melbourne; Wallscnd, for Grcymo'uth and an Australian port; and Dart-ford, barque, for Newcastle, via Sydney. No work whatever was done on tho Napier . wharves yesterday, and in consequence tho Eipple was idlo all day. She will return to Wellington on Monday, and will on Tuesday and Wednesday load lor her usual ports. . After having been considerably delayed at Patea on account of tho bar'being unworkable, tho Waverley iB expcctcd to arrive here to-day. The Waitangi will relievo her, and Bho will go on tho Blip for annual inspection. Tho Kahika will lcavo Greymouth on Monday for Wellington and Lyttelton. Her cargo will be one of timber. Tho Waimarino will, on completion of discharge of her coal cargo at Wellington, load at Lyttelton and l'imaru for Auckland. The Kaituna. will go down to Westtort.
