A lively interest is being displayed in the Borough Council election for Sliajinon. Messrs. Murdoch and Spcneo will contest the Mayoral seat, and Messrs. Curran, Gustotsen, Far?her, Gardner, Hillier. Kelly; M'Millan, Mercer, Quarfio, Richardson, Spencer, Scott, arid Wood aro standing for election as. councillors. Tho Labour Party opened its campaign at a meeting over which Mr. G. Quarrie presided. Tho speakers were Messrs. Hillier, Scott, Kelly, and Gttstafsen, HI of whom received a good bearing and wero accorded a. vote of thanks. A new football cluib has been formed at Shannon, and it will .shortly take the field. The Masterton Returned Soldiers' Association. which has now a membership of H33,. held its annual meeting last night, 'Lieutenant-Colonel Cowles presiding. It was decided to alter the name of the association to the "Wairarapa Returned Soldiers' Association." Officers for the ensuing year were elected. The annual reunion was subsequently held in the municipal ball A lad fourteen years of age vm found in a Chinaman's chop in Masterton at a lato hour on Wednesday night. He had abstracted Ills. 6d. from tho Chinaman's till, nnd appropriated two packets of cigarettes. The Magistrate on Thursday committed liiin to 1111 industrial school. A very old settler of the Wairarapa and Forty-Mile Bush districts, in the lierson of Mr. Sinclair M. George, died at Alfredton a few days ago at tho ago of 8G years. Tho deceased was for a number of years proprietor of the Alfredton Hotel. Tho Masterton Returned Soldiers' Association ended its financial year with a credit balanco of Us. A match between tho Opaki ?nd Featherston Riflo Clubs fa to bo fired on the Omiki Tango at an early date. In its third annual report the Masterton Returned Soldiers' Association says; —"Members are now realising that ihe association affords an excellent channel lor the' ventilation of complaints and grievances, and we liavo had iiimiv opportunities to take these up nnd ' refer them to the authorities for roclilicalion. Many cases respecting soldiers' pay, pensions, etc., have been taken up satisfactorily. In this connection we have to thank tho many Government Departments to whom these matters lave been referred for their'courteous and prompt replies to our 'correspondence." 1 A number of soldiers who returned by the Corinthic and Jlaheiio reached Masterton yesterday, aud were welcomed at tho station.
