SERIOUS REPORTS FROM GENERAL ALLENBY

Mr., Keith Murdoch writes:—The seethins troubles throughout tho Islamic world, owing to the disruption of the Sultan's empire are the theme of earnest discussion.. General Allenby's reports are optimistic, but serious. He reiterates the request of the Council to lecognise ihe British Protectorate in f'Rypt, nnd announce a definite policy for Syria. lie describes the whole of Asia Minor us dangerous, especially Anatolia and Syria, where the Young Turks are actively' inflaming the Moslems agonist the Christians. A crack division has embarked from England for General Allenbv's assistance. The British murdeml in Egypt number many hundreds, and one English colony was wiped out. The whole of the men of the Australian Light Horse now in llgypt, and the Twelfth Regiment, have been sent to the Sudan. The men aro greatly disappointed at the interruption to their repatriation, and. feel strongly that they should be »ent home as soon as over relief is possible.—Aus.-N.Z.. Cable Assn.
OFFICIAL NEWS FROM INDIA (Rec. April 24, 9.50 p.m.) London, April 19. Official.—The latest reports from, the Punjab, state that two British officers were injured, a soldier, was killed, and tho Treasury attacked at Kasu. ■ At Amritsar on April 13 the mob defied the uroelamation • forbidding meetings. Firing ensued, causing two hundred casualties. Disorderly, elements in the '-ural, areas i.re damaging the Government's property and looting the trains. At Delhi, when the sliops .were reopening the Mohammedan mob interfered, and the police were obliged to fire, scattering the mob. Four of the police were injured. The city afterwards was quiet, and patrolled by 'troops. On the north-west frontier on April 13 an attempt was made to close the shops in Peshawnr. A mass meeting was held, the Hindus participating, at which a l-nycott of British goods was urged. No disturbances occurred. Calcutta is normal. The Moderates have issued ft manifesto condemning passive resistance, and deploring the recent events. , Bombav is quiet, but there is suppressed excitement anions the Mohammedans.
