FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
' EXTENSION OF EIGHTS. Cabinet agreed yesterday to an extension of the right ,to financial assistance to soldiers who left New Zealand before the scheme was in operation, and who, being unaware of its existence,-were unable to take advantage of the scheme. Although offico has been almost closed down it has been agreed by Cabinet that these inun are to luyre an opportunity of making application for financial assistance. Cases have been represented to the Minister of Defonce of men who have come back to New Zealand to find accumulated liabilities, and it is thought fair that they should have assistance in the discharge of th&se liabilities in the same way as they would no doubt liave had assistance had they been able to apply before departure for help from the Department to carry these liabilities while on service abroad. No estimate can be made as to the amount that will havo to be paid under this head.
