COUNCILLOR BARBER'S CANDIDATURE

MEETING AT KELBURN

Councillor W. H. P. Barber (candidate for the Mayoralty) last evening addressed a small and quiet meeting of electors at Kelburn Kiosk. Councillor M. P. Luckio presided. In introducing the candidate, Hi'. Luckie expressed the, opinion that no other member of the council, and no other candidate for the Mayoralty had such an intimttte knowledge of the nf-i'.-iirs of tho city as .Mr. Barber had. Long experience of municipal matters and of business enterprises had thoroughly qualified Mr. Barber for the position to, which he aspired. Mr. Barliijr'e address was very similar to the speeches he had previously delivered in other places. He made reference again to statements made by the present Mnvor, Mr. Luke, when firstselected ; and ho, claimed that Mr. Luke, in offering "Jiimself again, was acting against Iha sense of his former professions. Mr. Tiarber Vlso spoke of service that he had rendered aa a member of the council. Had his proposals been carried out years ago, he claimed, Minunar would to-dnj have been a part of the city, and the city would have reaped great advantage. He was in favour of amalgamating Knrori with Wellington. He thought, in fact, that the natural limits of Wellington included nil the placra that were in large measure dependent: upon it. The epidemic had, of course, revealed a l;ad state .if affairs in (Wellington, and ■ the question of congested quarters had beeii brought up prominently again. 'J here was a proposal for the reconstruction of the To Aro Hat, but it was in his opinion [Tproposal involving too great an expenditure of money. The flat hhould lie declared an industrial area, and the housing question should be dealt with in another way. One of the host means of coping with the housing problem was to provide facilities Cor settlement in parts situated well away from the centre of the city. f A. unanimous vote of thanks to the speaker was carried at the conclusion of the meeting.
