NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES

MANAWATU

The following nominations have been received for Palmerston North School Committee elections, to be hold next Monday :—Campbell Street: Messrs. J. Muirhend, J. O. Carty, G. Hampson, C. Taylor, A. H. Mills, G. Allman, 11. V. Vivian, A. Steuberg, A. E. Wright, P. T. Eobertson, A. W. Gallichan, A. B. Mellor, A. Clark, P. W. Jewell, C. W. Penuians, J. W. liimmer, and A. J. Mahon. College Street: H. C. Baker, A. C. Braddeld, P. Caville, T. E. Prondi, J. R, Gerrand,. C. J. Gill, H. C. Le Grange; J. Lissington, S. Sanson, Mrs. Crabb, Mrs. Gill, and tho Eev. A. Doull. West End: W. E. Presnoll, B. Abraham, P. Matheson, and C. W. Whitehead. Tho M'anawatu Unitod Friendly Societies held their initial social of the season on Monday night. Tho dance music was supplied by Bro. H. Spsraw, whilst Bros. It. S. Watson and 0. B. Karris carried ont the duties of M.C.'s. Tho socials will be held monthly throughout the winter. During the evening Bro. 11. Shnrman introduced Bro. F. Pycroft to tliose prosont, and stated that tho latter ' had been chosen to represent the local friendly societies on the Palmerston North Hospital Board election. In the course of a short address, Bro. Pycroft said it was high\time the.soeioties should have representation on tho board. All that, was wanted was a fair and square deal from, the board, which, he said, they had so far not received. At a meeting hold at Apiti, over which Mr. Cyrus Smith presided, it was decided to form the "Apiti Football Club." Mr. N. S. M'Leod was appointed secretary and treasurer, and the election of other officers was left over till a later meeting. Mr. 'W. Guy has donated a football to the club, and Mr. H. Watson lias placed the use of his paddock at the disposal of the club for the season. Mr. and Mrs. John Malone, of Ridge Road, Apiti, have lost their youngest child, which succumbed through sickness, j The Sunday school children's anniversary, in connection with the Apiti Methodist Church, passed off very successfully. A fine programme of music was rendered by the orchestra which comprised Mrs. G. Thurston, Miss M'Birnie, and Messrs. G. Thurston, W. Burne, C. Osborne, 11. Thurston, /and H. Palmer (director). Items were contributed as follow:—Songs, Misses O'Conuell and A. Goldsmith; recitations, Ruby Richards, Rene Little, Phyliss Guy; violin solo, Mr. C. Osborne.. A meeting of Apiti settlers will bo held at the end of the week to discuss what form the projected memorial that is now being collected for is to take. The local Peace Celebrations Committee has now all its arrangements well in hand. Lieutenant Sid Gould, eldest son of Mr. John Gould, and Private W. Duncan, are expected back in Apiti shortly from the front. Private W. Hogan, formerly of Apiti, has returned, and is staying with his brother, Mr. D. Hogan, of Table Flat. A deputation of business men waited upon Messrs. E. 11. Crabb .and C. ?■ •Suooner yesterday morning, and asked tliera to reconsider their decision not to see* re-election to the Pnlmerston North Borough Council. The deputation pointed out the necessity .of .having; in view of the state of the borough finances, as strong a council as possible. Both Messrs. Crabb and Spcpner acceded to the request, and have again been nominated for the council., Contrary to expectation there will be a contest for the Palmerston Mayoralty, Mr. W. Thomson having decided to stand against Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P. Other nominations for the council, which closed yesterday, aro the sitting .members, Messrs. ]!, L. Broad, If. .1. Canton,. C. N, Clausen, M. O'Reilly, A. J. Graham, L. It. Bryant, and the new asnirants are Messrs. C. Voss, F. W. Comerford. 11. C. Lo Grange, J. B. Beale, J. Hodgens, A. Pickering, S. R. Lancaster, .M. A. Elliott, J. Wallace, A. "Buchanan,- T. R. Hodder. Nominations for other local 'bodies are: —Hospital Board: Mr. C. Voss, Mrs. Z. S. Gill. Mr. A. V. Stamp;-' Mrs. P. Crabb; Messrs. J. A. Nash, M.P., F. Pycroft, and Dr. Whitaker (three to bft elected). Fo.iton Harbour Board: Mr. J. A. Nash (unopposed). Wellington Harbour Board: Messrs. M. Cohen and J. G. Cobbe (unopposed). The Palmcrston North police have been advised that a man named R. Frelchling was knocked down by ft niotor-cnr which was being driven through Levin at 8 o'clock last night, nnd was subsequently removed to the Otaki Hospital in a eeriouA condition. Mr. John Mitchell, a well-known farmer of the Shannon district, died yesterday after a lengthy illness. He was 81 u'ars of age. At the Papatawa Sports Club's gathering on Monday tho maiden hunters' competition was won by E. W. Watson (Paliuerston North), with D. Piper (Pahiatua) second. Mr. Watson was third in the thread-the-ncedle race on horseback. In tho ladies' driving competition Miss Brady was placed first, Miss Clark second, and Miss Hartstone third. In the high jump on horseback G. Bradley, a Papatawa schoolboy, won, clearing nearly five feet. K. Glendining was second, and D. R. Nesbit third.. The- following were tho principal awards in the Presbyterian Bible Students' camp sports at l'almorstbn on Monday :—Banner championship points: Palmerston North, 49' points; Kent Terrace (Wellington), 22 points; St. David's [Auckland), 17 points. Intermediate championship gold medal: H. F. Harvey (Palmerston North). Junior championship gold mednl: W. Wilton (Palmeriton North). Most points in handicap raec3:> A. C.
