AUCKLAND MEETING
UNCLE NED SCORES AGAIN. AFTERGLOW WINS TIU: ST. LEGER. Telegraph-Special Corresuondcnt.l Auckland, April 21. The weather was line but cloudy for the second day of tho A.R.C. autumn meeting. Tho going was excellent, and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled Jt78,823, against ,£62,905 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was ,£146,520, as comuared with ,£121,544,'1a5t year.
The Stewards' Handicap resulted in a decisive win for Taiamai, who went to the front at the start, and was never headed. All Talk ran second most of the way, but a quarter of a mile from home Bedford moved up, and ran- iftto second place. He was going strongly at the finish. but Taiamai won with something to snare.
The Mangore Handicap was won by Revenue, an outsider, who had been placed at country meetings. The only others really in the race were Escaped, who did not get a very good passage, and Independence
The Victoria Handicap was won easily bv Murihiku from the barrier risk. Crenides. one of the last to get away, came through as the field came into the straight, and managed to beat Stammer by a neck for second place. Neither of the favourites, Hetaua and Red Popper, were ever prominent.
The Great Northern St. Leger resulted in an easy win for Afterglow. Behekah went ! to . the front at the start, but as soon as the iield seriously clmllougcd her she compounded, and fell to tho rear. Afterglow took command, and going on confidently, won as she liked. Lovematch beat Hineamaru by a neck for second place. Though Husky Evo and Mascot were the public favourites for the St. George's Handicap, the connections of Uncle Ned were vorv confident that ,the son of Marble Arch could repeat his fine performance of. Saturday, and thoir confidenpo was not misplaced. Mangamahoe and Dusky Eve made the running for about a mile, when Uncle Ned and Mascot began to improve their positions. Tho pace proved too fast for Mascot. who fell back again, but Uncle Ned still came on, and on entering tho straight was closo behind Dusky Eve.' Uncle Ned got on terms with Dusky. Eve. and secured the 4 judge's verdict by about half a length. Heads separated the, second and third horses, Giizique filling third placc. Uncle Ned's- great performance was heartily applauded. .The Autumn Steeplechase proved a most interesting event, the winner being weli concealed .until tho . straight was reached. ' All four competitors jumped well/ and there were no accidents. Tenacious and Troublesome led the first mile and a half, and then Golden Glow made a. forward move, and took command, with Kurapai in close attendance. These two kept in the van. ivith Kurapai lead-, inc until half a mile from ,home, when Troublesome put in another challenge. He took the lead after tho last hurdle had been negotiated, and was not again headed, though ICurapai kept him moving fintil the post was reached. Spanner was made'a very strong favourite in the Huia Handicap. Ho and Torfreda went to the front from the barrier rise, and kept together till entering the straight:, when Spanner dre,w away, and won bv several lengths. King Lupin inado a strong run about a hundred vards from home, but had to be content with third plnce.
