The weather conditions experienced in and around Palmerston for the Easter holidays wero not ideal. On Thursday night a heavy frost occurred, which although doing considerable damage to late crops, gave promise of a fine Wood Friday. Barly oil 'Friday, however, tho wind again veered round to south-west, and by mid-day a heavy galo was blowing, accompanied by intermittent showers. In Saturday loreiioon the weather cleared and'beautifully fine weather set in. A start was made at Palmerston on Saturday with the North Island croquet championship tournament, organised by tho Mauawiitu Bowling and Croquet Club. Matches were played simultaneously on tho .Manawatu Club's greens and on the lawns at the residciices of Messrs. L. A. Abraham, P.'J. Nathan, and 31. Cohen. All tho competitions wero commenced, but none of them will be completed before the end of the week, and the majority of the visiting players, most of whom aro ladies, have signified their intention to put a week in at the tournament.
