NEXT SESSION
.MUST UK HEED 'BEFORE'OCTOBER. Discussing the much vexed question aa to whether there will be a session of Parliament before the general election takes place, the Hon. Arthur Jl,vers, Acting-Jlinister of Finance, stated to a representative'of Tjie Dominion" th<lt ; : irrespective of' general political questions, it 5s absolutely necessary to pass toxins legislation, as' no land tax can bo collected until the Tax Bill has been passed. Land tax is usually inad.e payable 'about the' first week in November each year, and if the. usual date of payment is to-b« adhered to—and it is not seen how any alteration can be-made—the Tax Bill should be passed not later than the latter part of October, so as. to' enable an. Order-in-Couiicit to tie prepared ana issued before the date of.payment. There is also every probability' of legislation being passed on the lines of the Expiring Laws Continuance • Act, 191S, which extends tlie operations of. certain enactments' to August 31,. 1019.-. . "This aspect alone," snid the. Minister, "should remove any. doubts that iuay exist regarding the holding of a session. •
