BIRTH RATE IN IRELAND
The birth-rate in Ireland for the first tl'ree-quarters of last year is, says the "Freeman's Journal," the lowest on record. "Sinking no allowance for emf■rntion, tl\? population would, according tu these figures, have increased dm-huc that, period by 20,522. As those are normally the months of highest emigration, this result is not so satisfactory as appears'nt first sight. The birth-rate during the period was at its lowest ebb. Dunn" the first three months of the year it was 18 per cent.; during the second quarter it was SI per cent.; ami during the third quarter G} per cent, below the average birth-rates in each of those quarters during the previous ten years. The death-rate in the first half of the year showed a considerable improvement. It was "0 per cent, below the average in the fn-rit quarter and 6 per cent, below the average in the second Mic.rter. In the third' quarter, however, the death-rate exceeded tho average by B.} pr cent, lhe improvement in the death-rate removes tho less in the lower birth-rate. Iho lo=s by the lowered birth-rate was 2775, but the improvement in the death-rate was equivalent to a gain in population of 4702, Hence the increase of population, having regard to the balance of births and deaths alone, was 2CCO above that of the average year.
