Sir Joseph Maclay, Shipping Controller, replying to Sir Joseph Ward's representations for the transfer of the River Plato steamers to New Zealand, says the Ministry of Shipning, tho Board of Trade, and tho Ministry of Foo:V had discussed the matter fully, and had decided that the transfer was impracticable at the present time, owing to the. meat situation in 'Britain and in Europe. Tt is understood that the refusal of the Ministry of Shipning to find tonnage for New Zealand apples is due to the fact that New Zealand was .not shipping amies to England; 'before the war. —Aus.-N.Z.
