PLAGUE RATS
REPORTED ON STEAMER MALTA,
A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that a, cable message received by an Auckland underwriter gives tho 'information that, homeward bound from Wellington, the P. ind 0. steamer Malta has arrived at Bombay, where the ve?sel was found, on '.xauiination by the health authorities, to be infested by a plague of rats. She was consequently detained and the whole of the cargo is being landed' to facilitate the disinfecting of tho steamer. The cargo will apparently later be reshaped, and carried to its destination. Tho Malta, which loaded at Wellington, 'eft this port 011 February 28 for the United Kingdom, via Newcastle, Bombay, and The local port and health f.uthoritios cannot throw any light upou this message-. The Malta, had a clean bill 'of health when leaving New Zealand. If rots infected with plague have been found on the boat at Bombay, they may have contracted the infection en route.
