LIBRARIES —4. SCOPE AND EXPANSION DISCUSSED. By l'eleirraDh—Press Association. Dunedin, April 10. Tho aiithoiities in charge of tho Hocken and M'Nab Libraries have been discussing tho scope and future expansion ot' theso valuable collections of literary treasures, with the l-esult that ii- has been agreed that the two libraries shall work together, the llocken Library specialising 011 the period prior to 1901, and the M'Nab Library specially devoting its energies to tho period Kince. Together liie.y'will cover the whole field of New Zealand literature. They are ailready attracting students from p.ll parts of the Dominion, and as the study of history develops these should grow in numbers. The. Hocken Library is without a rival in its collection of original documents. notably the journals and fetters of early missionaries, those of Snmncl Morsvien beginning in 1813. It also has a fine collection of works on llie Maori language, including several unique specimens from the early missionary presses in the north. The M'Nab Library contains the In(e Dr. M'Nab's copies of tags and journals of early navigators, from Captain Cook's time onwards, and is especially complete in gazettes and records of Government Departments. One section is devoted to magazines of New Zealand-schools and university colleges.
