WATER AND DRAINAGE FOR KARORI
A PRELIMINARY REPORT
In a preliminary report dealing with water ami drainage the Karon Borough engineer (Mr. G. ,\V. llinghaui) says that tiie nearest water simply is that recommended by the City Engineer for the eastern part of Karori-to purchase water irom the city, to be obtained from tho reservoir near Highbury Itoad. This supply could bo obtained at about Is. 6d. per thousand gallons, and Karori coi)ld bo supplied from this source for all time or a for a great number of years. Tho daily assumed consumption for the present population would bo 51,000 gallons, or :!0 gallons per capita per day. Tho water would gravitate from the reservoir by way of Ana Jioad, Evelyn Mace, I'onsoiiby ltoad, Wallace Street, Duthio Street, to a service reservoir which would servo the borough, with the exception of certain high levels along View Koad, f'airview Estate,' south end of I'onsoiiby Street, Hill Street, Peers Street, Donald Street Extension, Harris Street, Russell Orescent, and Makara Hill. Six of the high levels could bo served by pumping. The maximum pressure would be 1001b. at certain points, and would vary greatly at different points of tho borough owing to the configuration of the ground. In tho drainago scheme it is proposed to divide tho borough into two parts. One part containing 3011 acres (including the cemetery) would drain towards .the Kniwarra Stream, and the oilier, containing 1577 acres (a Rood' deal of which is pastoral).would drain into the Karori Stream. The eastern drainage will disdharge into Ihe city main, running down tho Kaiwarra Stream and emptying into a septic tank at. Kaiwarra. Tho western drainage will be brought from Beautiful Karori to the junction of Hatton Street and the Main Koad, and thence in a main sewer down Hatton Street to where (he Karori Stream crosses the street, rfceuco down the stream, crossing Parkvalc ltoad and Chamberlain Street to the east end of Brigge Street, and across the Park to the tram terminus, and into the South Karori Koad. The report ivas submitted to the council at , tho meeting held last evening.
