BOOTS AND LEATHER
CONFERENCE OF INTERESTED ■ PARTIES. . The scheme for the production of standard boots at standard prices for the retail trade is being delayed owing to the difficulties that have occurred about the price of hides. The boot manufacturers demanded in the first instance that if they were to produce boots at fixed prices they should first be assured that tney would be able to get their raw .materials at fixed prices. Consequently the Government prohibited the export of hides, for this was the effect of the direction that hides might not be exported until they had first been offered to the local tanners. This order from the Government has led to complaints from the producers, who havo said that they are losing heavily by this arrangement. To settle these differences if possible, the President of the Board of Trade (tlio Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald) has convened a conference of producers, brokers, tanners, freezing companies, and boot manufacturers. This conference will meet in a few days, and it is the hope of the Minister that the conference wi!l clear the way for the production of standard footwear.
