SATURDAY'S CITY MATCHES PARTNERSHIP RECORD BROKEN 'At tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon three -senior .cricket matches— Old Boy 6 v.. East, North v. Potone, and Hutt v. Returned Soldiers—were commonced. '' : ' The most'interesting match,' inasmuch as upon its result the senior championship depends, was that opened by Old Boys against East. Old Boys, on Saturday' completed their first; innings, and compiled a total of 247 runs, tho chief contributors being G. Baksr (62,' i not out) and Knowlcs-Smith (50).- Hatchings took four wickoto.for 51 runs, alio: Bind, one for 10, .making the best, averages_of the bowlers for East:. 'Tho position is.that if East wins' tho match'or'Make a'draw of it', they secul'o tho championship; on tho-other hand, Old Boys may secure it by a two-point will. . East opened their first, innings, on. Saturday just Wore stumps were drawn, and made nine without any casualties. 1 : • Batting- for North in the' first innings against Petone,, lliddlestoii and . When-tho fifth wicket.(Hiddleston'sl fell it was 403.. - Hiddlestop made 240 before he was- caught by -Doneghue off Brice, ' He thus-came very near to reaching tlie record individual score, for Wellington, which, by a-curious coincidence, is tho same as the. record partnership score. When stumps were drawn .Wagfitaffe had made. 118, not out, and North, were credited' with 403 for five .wickets, The fact that only eight extras-were included in North's.big total.was due principally to tho masterly wicketkeeping of, C ln-the match ,Hutt v. Returned. Soldiers, -Hutt went-in first and made 168 runs. The principal (scorers were Locket(36) aud Hughes (35). Returned Soldiers replied with 121 for three-wickets-Pat-rick-.41 and Allardyce (not out) 39. . • All three matches will be concluded on Saturday next. .. -Following are details of the scoring',, -.etc,;—,. ...
