HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

The fortntehtly sales, of hides and tallow were held yesterday by the various brokers. ,

Messrs. Dalgety and Co. report that competition was'dull, and was practically confined to the tanners. present, and all lines of hides were sold within the limits fixed' in the Government schedule. Calfskins were a trifle easier, whilst tallow was again in poor demand, as soapmakers are all fully -stocked, and were not keen to buy except at reduced rates. Messrs. Murray. Itoberts, and- Co. report that they offered a catalogue of 350/ hides. On account of the Government limitation of prices and export embargo, bidding was restricted primarily to-tan-ners,, who took practically all the sound lots bflered. at par with last sale rates, excepting calf, which declined sharply. There was rather more inquiry for tallow. The New Zealand Loan .and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd., state that bidding was not spirited for tallow and fat, but there was a good' demand for hides aud calfskins.

Calf showed a decline of about 2d. per lb. unon last sale's p'-ices, although some fetched the Government maximum prices. Tallow buyers showed liltlo disposition to operate, and whilst biddings were dull last sale's quotation* worn hard to mnintain, consequently the majority of offerings were withdrawn.' but we have since placed privately all lots at only a slight reduction on last sale's rulings."

Ltd., report that prices for the general run of hides were practically on a nar with last sale rates. Bidding for calfskins was not so brisk, and values of previous sales were not maintained. There were few buyers in the market for tallow, and many lots were passed in. Tho Nov/ Zealand Farmers' Co-ooeratlve Distributing Co., Ltd.. report a fairoflcrin? of hides and calfskins. The buying locked briskness, competition still being restricted owing to the Auction of export still being unsettled. Prices for hides were nncticallv on iar with ln«t. sale, if anything slitMly easier. Calfskins were from Id. to 2d. per lb. easier. Tallow was slightly better, but still In poor' demand.
