The Taranaki Hospital Board can give points to many other similar i>oaies in New Zealand iii respect to administration. and. one of the very successful institutions connected with the hospital i. n farm of 26 acres, which adjoins Hie home. : This' is ,exclusive of six acres occupied by tho honic bmUlings and vegetable garden. The 26-acre homestead farm is subdivided into ten paddocks, which are well watered. t About ek>\on acres tiro under 'cultivation for winter feedinc purposes, and the manager staled that; ho-had absolutely no anxiety as regards this winter's or spring feed, llie equipment of the farm is very satisfactory, there'being all the-essential: buildings. .fAn eight-bail cowshed, which thoroughly--conforms .-with modern requirements', provides the milking accommodation.- and iv little detiuhed lrom it are "the separator-house and the nulko.ooler. ' Appliances for cleaning the cans and tho separator parts have, ot course, been installed, the borough water supply and the gas service to a large copper boiler providing the requisites m this connection. In connection with tlio winter feed store a fib Ims been erected for the purpose of making ensilage. This lias up to the. present been filled up to the top about five times with green stuff, which' now has compacted down to about half the full capacity of the silo. Whilo the farms are showing excellent. Toot crops, tho outstanding crop is that of an acre of Japanese millet, which has been grown on the board's' leased farm, tho sowing being 161b. of seed with flcwt. ot mixed manure. The crop is thick and beautifully even. In addition _to dairying,'pigs and poultry aro now being kept as siclq lines, ntid the farm is woll stocked- in both these directions. Tho present stock of .fowls totals about 200, and whilst., the.v have provided quite a number of eggs for the board's institutions they are primarily ' for fattening nhrposps.. The. board is to be congratulated for its enterprise, arid tho properties afford a lesson in self-support which might well be copied by kindred institutions.
