TONNAGE FOR OVERSEA PRODUCTS
STATEMENT BY SHIPPING CON. TROLLER. (Roc. March 26, 7.45 p.m.) London, March 25'. The New Zealand Luncheon Club entertained Sir Joseph Mac-lay, the Shipping Controller, who said that the Food' Ministry was hoping to restore unfettered trade to Australasia as quickly as possible. The purchase of wheat and meat in America had heen essential juring the war, as it was possible to geb four cargoes from there compared with one from Australia. The price paid to the American Meat Trust was governed by tho price paid l>y the United States War Office, which took 90 per cent, of the Trust's supplies compared with the British 10 per cent. The Ministry of Pood had been obliged to pool supplies on the basis of average cost, and sell the meat at a flat rate. Directly tonnage was available freo imports of Australian and New Zealand products would be restored.—Aus.-N.Z. CaWo Assn.
