« LARGE RESIDENCE DESTROYED. By Teleuranh—Press Association. Hastings, March 15. The Elms, a twelve-roomed two-storied residence, owned and occupied by Mr. Joseph Truman, was reduced to ashes, at 3 o'clock this morning. Tho building was thirty years old. The flames spread with alarming rapidity, barely affording timo for Mr. Truman and his wife and two children, in their night attire, to escape from an upstairs bedroom. The lire is supposed to have been started by sparks, from the sitting-room grate. Tho furniture and other contents of tho house were all destroyed. Tho insurances are: On the buildings, ,£IOOO in the New Zealand offico; furniture and effects, .£SOO in the Atlas office. The owner values the buildings at and the furniture at .£IOOO.
