; MAYOR'S-SONS IN UNIFORM. Engineer-Lieutenant- George Luke,. ,R.N.R., third sou of the Mayor- (Mr. J. I'.Luke), is coming back to New Zealandvia America, and-will join the Makura .on her next trip:to .this country. He was-an engineer in, the service of the ; "Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd.y for some years, but just prior to the outbreak of war. was connected with tho firm of J. J. Niyen *ud Co., Ltd. Ho enlisted and left New Zealand with the Seventh Reinforcement, and saw service in Egypt, and subsequently in France for twelve months, being liirough the battle of the Homme. He was then transferred to the Navy, and has been iu. that branch of the service ever since. '•
Supper ifrnnk W. Luke, the youngest son of Jlr. rind ■■•Mrs'. Luke, is uow in Germany with the Army of Occupation. He.went to Samoa, and, returning to New.Zealand, joined up with the Expeditionary Force, 11 nd haa.seen considerable soivice. He is now quartered alongside wrao large aniline factories. In a let- • ter to his parents, Sap.ner Luke tells of a visit of inspection to those' factories, .and states that the Hun has completely destroyed, all the machinery in them,' and. everything else which might reveal the process of manufacture of the.famous aniline dyes. The "eldest son of the Mayor and Mayoress,.. Mr. J. Pcarce Luke, was, prior to the war, district manager for J. J. Niven and Co. Soon after the war he joined up with the Munitions Department in England, and subsequently bocamo general manager of a largo munitions factory. .Then he was sent to (ho South of England on ah electrical undertaking for the Government, and in November last was dispatched to Oporto, in Portugal, by the Admiralty. Ho is still there. • He writes interestingly of the revolution which was in full swing whon he arrived there.
