RAILWAY FATALITY

MAN KILLED ON A CROSSING. (Special Correspondent.) Palmerston N., March 2-J. A railway fatality occurred at Taonui, between Bunnythorpo and Foildiug, on Saturday evening, resulting in tho death of Francis Edward Ward Mabey. a resident of Taonui for the past sixteen'years. The deceased, who was aged 76 years, lived with his brother near the Taonui railway station, and' late in (he afternoon he started out to walk to Feilding. Whilo in the net of negotiating a lovel crossing about a half-mile on the northern side of Taouui, ho was run into by a goods train, proceeding from Feildinjf to Palmerston North. It is surmised that he did not notice the train until it Vas 100 late, and he was observed by a train official to run in front of the engine. The train was immediately pulled up, «ud it was found that llaboy had been instantaneously Jailed, his skull being fractured and his right (high broken. The body was placed on the train, and conveyed to Palmerston. To-day it was railed to Loner Hutt, where the deceased's relatives reside. An inquest will be lield on a date to be fixed.
