RIOTOUS RARATONGAN SOLDIERS

The steamer Flo;a, which arrived at Auckland this morning, brought news of a riot that occunxd at Harotonga recently, when 300 returned native soldiers were landed thero. The soldiers practically took possession of tjie place. Shops were entered, tlireo stores in particular being more or less wrecked. At one of these stores the loss in goods taken by the soldiers, together with the general damage, was estiiualed at .£IOOO. One pjiopkeeper, it was stated, was very bad'v treated, being knocked down and kicked while he -was on the ground. He was rescued by the sergeant of police,' who quelled the rioters with a revolver. When the steamer Flora arrived a {; Uaroton^ , she was by the Government to carry those of the soldiers who did not belong to Rarotonga back to their own homes at Atui and Mauke. According to opinion (jn the Flora the trouble was duo to the alleged high charges made by the storekeepers to families of soldiers while the latter were on active service.
