TO-DAY'S CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Provided the weather is .favourable the sports meeting at the Basin Deserve tliis afternoon should attract a, large,attendance. The six provincial championships which form the principal portion ot tlio afternoon's programme promise to provide very keen competition, l'or these events the entries arc exceptionally numerous—more bo, in fact, than was eve- the case in pre-war days. ' For the blue riband event, the 100 yds., championship, there are thirteen entrants, for the 220 yds. eighteen, for the 440 yds. sixteen, and for the one mile ten. Iho field event championships, the high and broad jumps, liavo also filled well, tlieie bein" five nominations for the fomier and eleven for the latter. A similar measure of support has been accorded to the Handicap competitions, a3 is evidenced bj the fact that the 100 yds. and 300 yds. handicaps have drawn no fewer than twentysix entries each. . , During the live years close season that the sport has sustained, there was lying fallow among the younger generation a largo degreo of athletic talent which has been developed during the summer by t io series of weekly evening meetings.
