COUNCIL'S BURSARIES SCIIEMI'

A further meeting of the National War Funds Council was held yesterday afternoon. .Present: The lion. G. W. Russell (in the chair), Messrs. 11. Holland (Mayor of Christchurch), J. P. Luke (Mayor of Wellington), and Betliune.

Mr. Luke brought, up the report, of the committee appointed to consider applications for bursaries, and this recommended that 08 of those who applied should be awnru'ed bursarie,s, subject to further inquiires as to health and financial necessities, and aJso it.lio recommendation from tho registrar in the case of those who were in attendance at: a university college, and of tho headmaster of their last school in cases where they had not previously attended a college. The report was adopted, and tho necessary stops will be taken by telegraph in order that there may be no delay ill .awarding the bursaries.

The remaining cases will be fuirlher inquired into with a view to obtaining fuller information than tho applications disclose, and these will be considered la ter.

Speaking with regard to tho bursaries, the Minister said that it was tho desire 'of the council that the bursnies should be looked at from two points of view. First of all was that of appreciation for the sacrifices made by the soldiers, especially in the cases of those who hail suffered the interruption of their university careers in order to join the forces. The other was (he desire of the council to assist in raising the educational standard of returned soldiers, and thus make them more valuhbls assets to the Dominion than they would' be without tho higher education wiiiclt tho bursaries aro intended to provide.
