Tho Union Company's barque Dartford. bound from Vancouver to Wellington, was 15 miles south-cast of Caßtlcpoint at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday. She is 60 dayß at sea, and is expected to arrive here to-day. FREIGHTS TO BRITAIN. A reply to the complaint made by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce concerning the non-reduction in freight rates from New Zealand to Groat Britain, Jias been received from the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Allen), who states the High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Mackenzie, telegraphed that there was "no conncction betwen outward and Homeward freight, governing conditions not being on a comparablo basis. "I have been in communication with several steamship companies," the High Commissioner states, "and find that no further reduction in freights from New Zealand to the United .Kingdom are at present contemplated." Ho adds that as liner tonnage was at present being released from requisition, the adjustment of commercial rates of freight was a matter outside the scope of the Ministry of Shipping. The High Commissioner stated, however. that ho would approach variouß steamship companies regarding hemp freights. VIA PANAMA, It iB officially announced that after'the sailings from. It is reported in Sydney that the Toromeo (ex-German steamer Tiberius) left New York on February 20 for Wellington, Hobart, and Melbourne, fully laden with case oil. Jar the Vacuum Oil Company. As the vessel was at Colon on March 3, she is due at Wellington about the end of the month. The Stella arrived at Wailangi, Chatham Islands, at 1 a.m.: yesterday from Lytteiton. Sho is now loading for Wellington. Tho movements of' overseas vessels at Wellington yesterday were as follow:— Argyllshire arrived iii: the morning from Auckland and Gisborne; Atherilc sailed at noon for Auckland; Middleham Castle at 1.45 p.m for Melbourne and Sydney; Zealaiulic at 4.25 p.m. for London, via Bombay: Bolgian motor schooner Ady in the evening ifor Auokland. Tho French ship Amiral Cccille will sail this morning for Adelaide to load wheat for tho French Government.
Yesterday afternoon the Mamari sailed from Bluff for Wellington to eompleto Homeward loading. Her departure for London, via Bombay, has been set down for Thursday, March 27.
A load of rails for the Public Works Department will bo taken from Wellington to-morrow- for Tanranga, by tho Richardson coaster Mako.
Tho Kini is expected at Wellington tomorrow from Duncdin.

A correspondent, points out. that, tho rast trip of 38 days of tho shin Dunsyre, from Ran .Francisco to -Wellington, is probably the fastest on record, hut in 1870 the barque Alice Cameron, 347 tons, of tho Oircular San Line, under tho command of the late Captain .Tolin Nenring, made the passage from Golden Gate to Auckland in 31 days. Tho round voyage to San Francisco and back occupied onlv 105 davs. The same vessel, while engaged in the Auckland-Sydney trado, made o, passage from Sydney to Auckland in 5 days 4 hours, and the round voyage occiipicd under 51 days. .

There have,been rumours o[ a falling-off in the rates of freight paid on case oil from San Francisco to tlio Antipodes, but so far thero arc no means of discovering whence these rumours emanated, or that, there lias been any chaujje in this claBS of freight rates (says an exchange). Mayor James Rolph, owner of the steamer Annette Rolph, recently at Wellington. and the barqucntine Hesporian, now discharging at Taranaki Street Wharf, is transforming his proposed shipyard sito m Alameda into, a coaling and warehouse station. Ho intends to construct two piers, each 500 feet in length, capable of accommodating four of the largest shins to enter San Francisco Bay. Tho Luckenbach Line lias recently had two very flno cargo steamers launched, namely, tho J. L. LuoUcnbach and tho Katrina Luckenbach, both of C 074 tons register.
