BUSH FIRES IN HAWKE'S BAY
HEAVY DAMAGE REPORTED.

Dannevirke, March 18. Bush fires are raging in the To Relmnga and Ruaroa districts. The heavy ga 1 9 has now changed, and. is blowing the flames towards the wooded country. Tho settlers immediately threatened are Messrs. Edlin, Harris, Stanford, Sharplm, Cubbit, M'Leun, and Criesoii. Details are difficult to obtain. The settlers liave been fire-fighting all night.
~,, , ' ' Later. Jiie galo has died down, and rain is falling. The fires are thought to bs under control. Heavy damage has been done to cowsheds and stock, settlers havnig great difficulty in getting stock out of the burning area. No dwellinghouses havo yet been burned, but some are seriously threatened and the families have quitted them. Some small settlers ara very heavily hit. Tires are said to lie ragmg m the coast district, especially at Horoeka, but no definite details are to hand from this quarter.
